Microsoft is playing for second place in tablets. It has to win, because the sad truth is it can't afford to ship a new Zune: History tells us empires rise and empires fall, and, phenomenologically, at least, once your firm disappears from public consciousness, it's as if your empire was never, ever, ever there at all.
