SPECIAL COUNSEL REPORT ROCKS BIDEN WHITE HOUSE Hur concluded his investigation into Biden's handling of classified documents on Feb. 8, declining to pursue charges against the president. In his report, Hur made several notes about the state of Biden's memory, even noting that the president appeared to forget when his term as vice president began and ended and when his late son Beau Biden had died during an interview. Daily Caller analysis writer Gage Klipper breaks down the report: Despite acknowledging that he "willfully retained" classified documents in "unsecured places," Hur declined to bring charges because Biden is a "well-meaning elderly man with a poor memory" whose "mental state of willfulness" could be adequately established to a jury. If he's too old and senile to be charged with a crime, he's too old and senile to remain the leader of the free world. Democrats cannot have it both ways. Predictably, Biden did little to ease concerns when he mixed up the presidents of Mexico and Egypt in a press conference immediately following the release of the report. The firestorm of responses were equally predictable. Many conservative observers quickly called for Biden to be removed under the 25th Amendment, which establishes a framework for succession when a president is unable to carry out his duties. Even the usually cautious former U.S. Attorney Andrew McCarthy said there's "enough to invoke the 25th Amendment." Democrats have focused on the fact that Biden has been exonerated of wrongdoing — a tenuous claim in itself — but even a CNN panel had to admit that he faces a "five-alarm fire" when it comes to strategic messaging. So surely, at this very moment, there are some very powerful people in the Democratic Party frantically debating what to do about the Biden Problem. The report is trifecta: it destroys Biden's claim to be young and spry; his improper handling of classified materials "risked serious damage to America's national security" according to Hur, and thus undermines the Democrats' pitch that the "adults are in the room"; and it adds further confirmation to Donald Trump's accusation that he is a victim of two-tiered justice system, being aggressively prosecuted for the very same crime. The people who coordinated to install Biden in 2020 are now working to decide if it's time to cut their losses. Biden held an unexpected press conference after the Hur report was released and talks about his memory circulated. The president criticized Hur for bringing up his son's death during the press conference. “How in the hell dare he raise that?” Biden told reporters in the unexpected press conference. “Frankly, when I was asked the question, I thought to myself, it wasn’t any of their damn business.” |
