Pink slips rain down on Microsoft
As had been rumored earlier this week, Microsoft lopped off a second set of jobs Thursday, cutting 2,100 positions, as part of a restructuring plan announced two months ago to eliminate 18,000 positions, or about 14% of the company's workforce. "The reductions happening today are spread across many different business units, and many different countries. We will continue to go through this process in the most thoughtful manner possible, with the deepest respect for affected individuals and recognition of their service to the company," a Microsoft spokeswoman said via email. All affected employees will receive severance packages. Microsoft dismissed about 13,000 employees in the first wave of layoffs in July, according to the spokeswoman. It's not clear when the remaining 2,900 jobs will be cut and whether those layoffs will happen in one or more waves. When completed, the staff reduction will be the largest in Microsoft's history. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

Microsoft knocks iOS 8 install requirements, ups OneDrive free space
Microsoft yesterday levered the news that some iPhone owners had to delete content before installing the new iOS 8 with an offer to nearly double the free space for its OneDrive cloud storage service."While it might seem strange to announce new features on a Friday evening, we've been listening to the commentary about storage on the new iPhones released today and we wanted to get you more storage right away," wrote Douglas Pearce, a group program manager with the OneDrive team, on a blog. "We think you'll appreciate having more free storage while setting up your iPhone 6 or upgrading to iOS 8."To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

Microsoft, Getty copyright dispute heads for mediation
A judge in New York has postponed for mediation proceedings a decision on an injunction motion by Getty Images against a Microsoft Bing widget, which allowed publishers to embed image collages and slideshows from search results on their websites. Getty had earlier this month filed a complaint in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York against Microsoft, in which it alleged that the image galleries and slideshows typically consist of copyrighted images, including those owned or controlled by Getty. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

Microsoft plots Dynamics CRM update with an eye on marketing, global expansion
Microsoft is poised to release a major update to its Dynamics CRM and marketing applications in a bid to gain market share against rivals such as Salesforce.com. Dynamics CRM 2015, an update to Dynamics CRM Online and a new version of Dynamics Marketing will all be generally available in the fourth quarter, Microsoft said this week. The fact that a CRM update is coming isn't hugely unexpected news. Microsoft releases new versions a number of times each year for the products, which share the same code base. What's more significant are moves Microsoft is making to tie its marketing application more closely to CRM, in terms of both functionality and release cycles. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More
