FAA clears movie and TV drones for takeoff
The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration is taking its first major step toward opening up the skies for commercial drone use, allowing six TV and movie production companies to use drones to shoot video. Commercial flight of drones has been effectively banned by the FAA as it grapples with how to integrate drone traffic into controlled airspace while not compromising the safety of existing air traffic. But as the months have passed, it has come under increasing pressure from U.S. companies to make a ruling. Online retailer Amazon.com has been one of the most vocal, warning that it would take development of parcel-delivery drones overseas if the FAA doesn't allow commercial use soon, and numerous other companies in the movie production, agriculture, environmental and energy industries have also been lobbying to allow their drones to fly.To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

Living with the Moto G (2014): How good can a budget phone be?
It's amazing what kind of smartphone experience $180 can buy these days. Let me back up a minute: I'm not talking about $180 on contract with a carrier. When you walk into your favorite carrier's store and plunk down 200 bucks for a phone, you're actually buying a device that costs $600 to $700. They're just selling it to you at a discounted cost up front because you're promising to pay their inflated service rates for a full two years -- which lets them recoup the actual cost of the phone and then some. With the Moto G, you're paying $180 outright -- no contracts, no commitments, no obligations to pay inexplicably high monthly bills for the next 24 months of your life. You can take the phone and use it wherever you want, including at a prepaid carrier that'll charge you as little as $30 to $45 a month, no strings attached. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

IT skills that are in demand, and those that will be
IT professionals seeking certifications in the coming months may get their best return with cloud and security-related certifications. Agile-related training won't hurt, either. But there are many other skills that are more likely to be valued by employers than others, according to the most recent quarterly tracking analysis by Foote Partners. This survey calculates skill rankings on what employers are willing to pay. Skills sets tracked by Foote cover two broad areas: Certified and noncertified. Certified skills are typically vendor-driven and, while potentially useful for a job, are part of product marketing. Noncertified skills reflect actual market demand by employers. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

Data center consolidation pays off, feds find
Republicans and Democrats in Congress rarely seem to agree on anything anymore, but top members from both sides Friday offered qualified support for efforts to consolidate federal data centers. The action was prompted by a federal watchdog agency report that says U.S. data center consolidation efforts are paying off and have delivered savings of $1.1 billion. Most of these savings, $850 million or 74% of the total, were the result of efforts by the departments of Defense, Homeland Security and Treasury, according to the General Accountability Office, which measured savings from the federal data-center consolidation effort from 2011 through 2013.To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More
