Deep-dive review: iOS 8 packs some snappy new features
It's almost fall again, and so Apple has released the next generation of software that powers its mobile lineup: iOS 8. As always, this is a free update, and it packs new features and enhancements, both obvious and subtle. Building on last year's dramatic interface overhaul, iOS 8, which was released today, marks the second version of Apple's mobile operating system to feature 64-bit code (last year's iOS 7 being the first). This allows the iPhone to take full advantage of the 64-bit architecture built around the A7 chip in the iPhone 5S, iPad Air and the second-generation iPad mini; as well as the upcoming 64-bit A8 chip in the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus.To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

Nonetheless, competitors responded with even larger screens, trying to find areas where they could provide clear alternatives to Apple hardware. Consumers responded positively, so the competition started making even bigger phones. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

Bug infects Apple's iOS 8 HealthKit, delays app launches
A bug in Apple's HealthKit -- a back-end feature in iOS 8 -- is delaying the launch of outside developers' fitness and health apps, the company said Wednesday. HealthKit is a new tool for developers in iOS 8 designed to let their apps talk to Apple's native health apps. HealthKit is meant to pull in information from other apps and devices, like calories burned or heart rate, and make it more useful. For instance, it could allow a nutrition app, with the user's permission, to tell other fitness apps how many calories the person consumes in a day, Apple says. It can also let data like blood pressure be shared automatically with a doctor. "It just might be the beginning of a health revolution," as Apple calls it.To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

Apple releases iOS 8, starts serving upgrade downloads
Apple today shipped the free upgrade to iOS 8 for existing iPhone and iPad owners, opening up the download floodgates at 1 p.m. ET, as expected.Computerworld immediately began retrieving iOS 8 and in the initial stages at least -- with a slow broadband connection, the upgrade was forecast to take more than hour -- the download proceeded. As of 1:30 p.m. ET, there were no reports on Apple's iPhone support discussion forum about download problems. The biggest issue seemed to be the size of the upgrade -- many reported that it was in excess of 1GB -- and the enormous free-space requirements, which were 5GB and up. For owners of 16GB iPhones, not to mention those with the even punier 8GB iPhone 5C, that could be a major problem. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

Windows Phone should fear Android One, not the iPhone 6
Windows Phone has nothing to fear from the big-bang rollout of the iPhone 6. But Google's Android One project could well ensure that Windows Phone never becomes a serious smartphone contender. The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are high-end phones with high-end pricetags. The iPhone 6 will have 16GB, 64GB and 128GB models that will sell for $199, $299 and $399 with two-year contracts. The iPhone 6 Plus will have 16GB, 64GB and 128GB models for $299, $399 and $499 with two-year contracts.Microsoft is quite happy about that. The company has in essence given up on the high end of the smartphone market. Instead, it's targeting budget-conscious consumers unwilling to fork out so much money for a phone. The company calls its recently announced Lumia 830 Windows Phone, which sports a 1.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 400 processor, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, and a 5-inch screen an "affordable flagship."To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

How IT should prep for iOS 8
Although Apple has incrementally improved business and enterprise functions with every iOS release, three releases were particularly significant for business users and the IT professionals that support them: iOS 2 (called iPhone OS 2 at the time), which introduced support for Exchange ActiveSync and configuration profiles; iOS 4, which introduced Apple's mobile management and app encryption APIs and helped launch the MDM/EMM industry; and last year's iOS 7, which ratcheted up enterprise security and management capabilities. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

Apple issues third OS X Yosemite public beta
Apple yesterday released the third public beta of OS X Yosemite, shipping the preview a few days earlier than expected. The update, labeled build "14A361p," accompanied the debut of the eighth developer preview, also on Monday. The latter was available only to registered developers, who pay $99 annually for access to pre-release software so that they can begin building new apps and modify existing ones for what Apple also calls OS X 10.10.This week's eighth developer preview and third public beta are nearly identical in content and operation. The former was tagged as build "14A361c."Last month, Computerworld forecast that Apple would release the third public beta on Thursday, Sept. 18, assuming that the last two builds exposed a pattern of issuing the public beta three days after every other developer preview. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More
