EMC snaps up three startups to help build hybrid clouds
EMC continued its push into hybrid clouds on Tuesday, buying three startups and introducing a package of hardware, software and services for getting a cloud up and running. Cloud computing is part of EMC's vision for a so-called "3rd Platform" of IT, along with big data, social networking and mobile capabilities. China's Xiaomi surges to become world's third largest smartphone vendor
Phones from Xiaomi still haven't arrived in the U.S., but the company's booming sales in China have been enough to make it the third largest smartphone vendor in the world. Xiaomi reached the ranking, behind Apple and Samsung, in the third quarter, said research firms IDC and Strategy Analytics on Thursday. The Chinese vendor only began selling phones three years ago but it has quickly risen to become a leading vendor in its home market, by offering feature-packed Android phones at affordable prices. In the third quarter, Xiaomi had a 5.3 percent share of the smartphone market, still far behind second place Apple, which had a 12 percent share, according to IDC. Cleveland Clinic uses IBM's Watson in the cloud to fight cancer
The Cleveland Clinic is beginning a pilot program with a cloud service based on IBM's Watson cognitive computing technology to aid its research into new cancer treatments.IBM Chairman and CEO Ginni Rometty, speaking Wednesday at the 2014 Cleveland Clinic Medical Innovation Summit, said researchers at the clinic will use IBM's Watson Genomics Analytics to advance the use of personalized medicine based on the patient's genetic makeup.With better analytics and cloud access to information, scientists and oncologists are hoping to be able to deliver personalized medicine to patients. Earth imaging firm lost 26 satellites in Antares explosion
Planet Labs, a San Francisco-based start-up that wants to provide daily images of every spot on earth, lost 26 micro satellites when an Orbital Sciences rocket exploded shortly after lift-off Tuesday. The Antares rocket burst into flames seconds after rising into the sky from NASA's Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia, falling back to the launch pad and then spectacularly exploding in a huge fireball. The rocket was carrying a Cygnus spacecraft to the International Space Station. Among the Cygnus cargo were 26 satellites, the fourth group of satellites to be launched by the company.
