Darlene Storm: FDA asks hackers to expose holes in medical devices, but many researchers fear CFAA & jail
At Black Hat USA, two security researchers will highlight scary insecurity in medical devices and how humans can be hacked. Although the FDA has become an ally for security researchers who want to disclose medical device vulnerabilities, the research of other hackers has been chilled due to the aggressive way CFAA has been interpreted and used in prosecutions--such as in the cases of Aaron Swartz and convicted AT&T/iPad "hacker" Andrew "Weev" Auernheimer. Security research eventually trickles down to help protect the public, but many researchers are scrapping projects due to the fear of being sued or being sent to prison. Read More
