On October 21, 2016 a massive DDoS attack on Dyn, a major DNS provider, brought down some of the internet's marquee properties, including Twitter, AirBnB, and The New York Times. It was among the largest such attacks in history, and the ease with which its perpetrators turned legions of unsecured consumer IoT devices into agents of the attack foreshadows similar threats in the future.
