Should I Use Baby Washcloths To Wash My Face?

If you want your skin to look glowy and radiant (and, let's be real, who doesn't?), exfoliation should have at least a supporting role in your regular skin care routine. While there are a couple of ways to exfoliate, chemical exfoliation (like with alpha- or beta-hydroxy acids) is often touted as the gentlest way to remove the dead skin cells that can leave your complexion rough or dull. Generally speaking, that's true — but for some, even mild chemical exfoliants can leave the skin feeling itchy or irritated. If you're among the unlucky few for whom chemical exfoliation does not work well, you might want to consider washing your face with a baby washcloth instead.

Baby washcloths are typically made out of muslin, a loosely knit cotton fabric with a soft feel, similar to gauze. When lightly rubbed onto the skin, it can help loosen dead surface skin cells, buff away flakes, and leave the skin feeling soft and smooth without the irritation you may get from AHAs or traditional washcloths. If you think about it, it makes sense: You can't get much gentler than products designed for delicate baby skin. Even Bethenny Frankel swears by them for smooth skin.

Still, while exfoliating with a soft cloth is gentle, there are a few things you'll want to keep in mind for the best results. First — and perhaps most importantly — you'll need to swap out your washcloth every day, as damp cloths can harbor bacteria that can irritate your skin or contribute to breakouts. You also should use light pressure when exfoliating, as scrubbing your face with a cloth can leave your skin red or raw. And finally, always moisturize after exfoliating your face to help replenish your skin and give it the moisture it needs to look and feel its best. Follow these tips, and you'll be well on your way to baby-soft skin.
