Dear friends of the IAPP,

We are happy to share that today the IAPP has launched the IAPP AI Governance Center. With your help, we will be supporting privacy professionals and emerging AI governance professionals as they respond to the complex challenges in this field.

There is no denying that AI technology is rapidly expanding around the globe. The speed of adoption and innovation in AI products and services eclipses anything we have seen before. From Midjourney to ChatGPT, to AlphaFold and beyond, the rapid rise of AI systems is gripping, revolutionary and exceedingly complex.

We know AI has the potential to create significant benefits across society, but also serious concerns. Collectively, we need to ensure this massively powerful technology with huge impacts is implemented safely and in a way we can trust. As privacy professionals, we can answer this call to action.

Privacy professionals have transferable experience, skills and expertise that can be leveraged and built upon to govern AI. In fact, many of you are already doing the work. According to the 2023 IAPP/FTI Privacy and AI Governance Report, over 50% of respondents designing AI governance approaches are building on top of privacy programs and over 40% are using existing privacy assessments to manage AI risk.

For these reasons, the IAPP board of directors has unanimously approved the creation of the AI Governance Center. Within the center, the IAPP will provide privacy and AI governance professionals with the resources, networking, training and certification needed to respond to the complex risks in this field.

The AI Governance Center will be assisted by advisors who have been leading the conversation on the future of AI. The AI Governance Center Advisory Board includes a broad array of leaders in AI governance and risk:

  • Alisa Bergman, Chief Privacy Officer, Fanatics.
  • Julie Brill, Chief Privacy Officer, Corporate Vice President, Global Privacy and Regulatory Affairs, Microsoft.
  • Seth Dobrin, President, Responsible AI Institute.
  • Keith Enright, Chief Privacy Officer, Google.
  • Dennis Hirsch, Professor of Law and of Computer Science and Faculty Director of the Program on Data and Governance, The Ohio State University.
  • Cornelia Kutterer, Tech Policy Expert.
  • Naomi Lefkovitz, Senior Privacy Policy Advisor and Program Manager, Privacy Engineering, NIST.
  • Brenda Leong, Partner, BNH.AI.
  • Simon McDougall, Chief Compliance Officer, Zoom Info.
  • Brent Mittlestadt, Director of Research, Associate Professor and Senior Research Fellow, Oxford Internet Institute, University of Oxford.
  • Christina Montgomery, Chief Privacy & Trust Officer, IBM.
  • Dominique Shelton Leipzig, Partner, Cybersecurity & Data Privacy; Leader, Global Data Innovation & AdTech, Mayer Brown.
  • Frith Tweedie, Principal, Simply Privacy.
  • Eduardo Ustaran, Partner, Hogan Lovells.

  • Denise Wong, Assistant Chief Executive, Data Innovation and Protection Group, Singapore Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA).

But we need your help and support too. Please sign up for our newsletter to stay on top of the latest AI governance news, learn about our new offerings and engage in the development of the AI governance profession. And alert your teams that they need to broaden their skills to include this challenging new domain.

We cannot wait to get to work.

Sincerely,

J. Trevor Hughes, IAPP President and CEO

Mikko Niva, IAPP Board Chair and Vodafone Global Privacy Officer
