How to:
Secure Sensitive Data in SharePoint

SharePoint's rapid adoption is undeniable but it raises one important question: What security capabilities did Microsoft implement to ensure that SharePoint--and the data it houses--remains secure? Consider these four steps critical to securing your SharePoint deployment.

Get ahead of SharePoint deployments:
Implement a SharePoint governance policy, understand the limitations of native security features, and put security requirements in place before SharePoint instances go live.

Identify sensitive information:
Use file activity monitoring to audit usage and apply user rights management for the data accessed by users, customers, and partners. Ensure visibility into backend database operations to cover privileged user and separation of duty concerns.

Establish policies to ensure legitimate access to data:
Identify and delete dormant users. Implement data ownership procedures, create permissions reports for data owners, and alert on unauthorized or abnormal access scenarios.

Review configuration settings and check Web exposure:
Use tools like the SharePoint Google Diggity Project to check your site for vulnerabilities.
