HP Enterprise joins battle for the edge of IoT

The Internet of Things could help some companies save money or even boost sales, and the big names of enterprise tech are lining up to help their customers make the leap.Hewlett Packard Enterprise is in the thick of that pack. On Wednesday in London, it unveiled two gateway devices for gathering and processing data at the edges of IoT networks. The HPE IoT System EL10 and EL20 are available now.For enterprises, IoT holds out the promise of collecting information about what all the machines in a company are doing in real time. That data can help an organization predict when something needs maintenance and learn over time where the biggest demands on the system really are. If the company sells complex systems, like jet engines or turbines, IoT can also help it keep customers happy. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here READ MORE

IRS says it will get a warrant before using cell-site simulators

The U.S. Internal Revenue Service is drafting a policy to restrict the use without a warrant of cell-site simulator technology to snoop on the location and other information from mobile phones. The head of the IRS, John Koskinen, wrote in a letter that the agency was drafting a policy that would mirror an earlier Department of Justice rule,  which requires a search warrant supported by probable cause before using the technology,  except in exigent or exceptional circumstances.Cell-site simulators, also referred to as stingrays or 'IMSI catchers,' track the location and other information from mobile phones by mimicking cellphone towers. The use of the technology without a warrant by law enforcement has been criticized by civil rights groups. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here READ MORE

DARPA eyes faster design of military chips

The U.S. military's research division has kicked off a project to accelerate its design of custom chips, so the latest semiconductor technologies can be used more quickly in defense applications. For specific tasks like processing and transmitting images from a surveillance system, a custom chip can often do the job faster and more efficiently than a general purpose microprocessor. The custom chips are smaller and consume less power, but it can take more than two years and $100 million to design them for military applications, according to an estimate from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).As a result, the military often relies on commercial chips and uses software to boost performance, but that means compromises are made.To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here READ MORE
