ARM hopes to extend battery life of IOT devices with new chip design
ARM is trying to resolve the thorny problem of battery life in Internet of Things devices with a new chip design that will significantly reduce the power consumed by processors, sensors and wireless chips. The company has overhauled the way it designs low-power Cortex-M chips that go into IoT devices such as health monitors, smart home devices and sensors. The restructured design could almost double battery life, ARM executives said at Computex in Taipei on Monday. For example, the battery life of a connected hearing aid could more than double with chips based on the new design, said Jeff Chu, director of marketing at ARM. Chu provided another example of a smart lightbulb lasting a lot longer on a battery charge with new chips based on the design. The smart bulb could have solar cells to refresh the battery, and the chip's lower power consumption could help the battery last for years. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

Asus doubles down on tablets with ZenPad series
Asustek Computer's new tablet series, the ZenPad, will run Android 5.0 on Intel's latest Atom processors. The ZenPad series include tablets in the 7, 8 and 10-inch display sizes, and will start arriving in the third quarter, the PC maker said on the eve of the Computex trade show in Taipei. "Today, we are going to redefine what a tablet can be," Asus chairman Jonney Shih said at a company event there. Despite Shih's grand claim, the tablets seem fairly conventional. Although Asus claimed the products have a "luxury" feel, the backing on the low-end devices is a textured plastic. Asus touted the tablets as fast devices thanks to the Intel Atom processors inside. The tablets will come in a variety of configurations, but most will use Intel's Cherry Trail x3 four-core, 64-bit chips. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

Ericsson touts 5G mobile speeds
Telecom giant Ericsson announced this week it is testing out 5G networks in the U.S. and Sweden, and has already exceeded 2Gbps throughput using multiple radio streams at the same time. Ericsson made the announcement by releasing a photo of a van and asking "What seats 8 comfortably, gets 20 miles per gallon and more than 2 gigabits per second?" "Today, it takes up the luggage space in a mini-van but, by 2020, it'll fit nicely in your smartphone, watch or other wearable," Ericsson stated. The tests are taking place with a vehicle because the radio unit is too large to carry around on its own. Once 5G bands are approved, however, the radio unit will be attached to a cell tower. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More
