How LAN problems can impact on your firewalls

This week seems to have being a firewall issue week for me. I have worked on
incidents in two large networks where problems on the LAN managed to bring down
firewalls at the edge of the network. Firewalls have come a long way since the
original stateless varieties which were little more than a collection of access
control lists. These were superseded by stateful firewalls which kept track of
the state of network connections. Modern firewalls are now application aware,
you can do things like block access to certain applications or prevent users
from using applications like Bittorrent.

Face Unlock feature in Galaxy Nexus seen as novelty, not security

Face Unlock, the facial recognition software offered in Android 4.0 on the
Galaxy Nexus, is being promoted by Google as an alternative to using a PIN to
unlock a phone. But it can apparently be spoofed.

Darlene Storm: Surrounded by surveillance: Is everything spying on you?

Depending upon who you listen to, GPS tracking shouldn't be your only concern
when you are out and about on the streets. The ACLU hammered license plate
scanners as logging our every move, a different investigative report concluded
your car is spying on you, and some even claim the street lights are out to get
you.

Security experts dispute Google's attitude toward Android malware

Antivirus experts disagree with Chris DiBona, Google's open-source programs
manager, who recently said that there is no virus problem on the Android
platform and that companies selling anti-malware software for mobile operating
systems are "charlatans."

Will 2012 REALLY be the year of the cyberwar?

Much has been made of prospects for a cyberwar. Many believe we're already in
one. So what are security practitioners to do as they plan for 2012?

Darlene Storm: Android dubbed a cyber menace as mobile malware explodes

While Android is hugely popular, it's also the most highly targeted OS for
mobile malware. In fact, numerous security firms predict doom and gloom for
Droid security in the 2012 mobile device ecosystem; cybercriminals may view
Android as the new low-hanging fruit. Android mobile malware has 'exploded' and
was dubbed one of the biggest cyber menaces for government.

Despite controversy, cybercrime treaty endures

Delegates from around the world are meeting in France this week to discuss the
only international treaty dealing with cybercrime, a treaty that has come under
fire from some countries but defended by others as a crucial tool in fighting
electronic crime.

Healthcare breaches: Do they even matter?

Electronic medical record breaches continue, yet the public pays little
attention to healthcare provider security and privacy policies.

OK, let's think this one through, shall we?

Pilot fish and his boss are responsible for supporting more than 650 computers

requires a fair amount of help from the faculty and staff -- which isn't always
exactly what fish gets.
