Sony BMG Rootkit Scandal: 10 Years Later
Ben Edelman/Wikipedia A warning pops up on computer screen about Sony BMG rootkit on music CD Hackers really have had their way with Sony over the past year, taking down its Playstation Network last Christmas Day and creating an international incident by exposing confidential data from Sony Pictures Entertainment in response to The Interview comedy about a planned assassination on North Korea’s leader. Some say all this is karmic payback for what’s become known as a seminal moment in malware history: Sony BMG sneaking rootkits into music CDs 10 years ago in the name of digital rights management. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

How Uber's surge pricing actually affects users, and how you can avoid it
I'll admit I can be a cynic sometimes, especially when it comes to companies justifying dubious business practices by saying that it's really all for the customers' own good. Classic example: when I first heard about Uber's surge pricing—the ride-dispatching company's habit of raising prices in times of peak demand, like rainstorms or terrorist attacks—I didn't believe the company's explanation that it was actually a good thing for its users. The idea, the company maintains, is that higher prices are an incentive for more drivers to hit the road, reducing the imbalance between supply and demand.See also: How a Florida fender-bender could threaten Uber's business model  It seemed too convenient to be true, I thought, and smacked more of profiteering than public service. But that was just a hunch, I had no evidence to support my cynicism. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

Review: Asus ZenWatch 2 brings good design and robust hardware at a bargain price
When I began the Asus ZenWatch 2 review, I knew nothing about the watch except what was printed on the box, not even the price. I relied on the capable advice of Elizabeth Mezias, an expert developer who has worked with Android and Android Wear since before either software systems was released.Scrolling and app-launching performance of the Asus ZenWatch 2 was equivalent to those of other Android Wear watches, like the Moto 360 or LG G Watch R. Reversing recent trends, the ZenWatch has a square face instead of a round one, like the Motorola and the LG watches. Here's a photo comparing the ZenWatch 2 with other popular Android smartwatches. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

Why Google is committed to Chrome OS
The Wall Street Journal reported last week that Google would fold the Chrome OS into Android, spawning widespread rumors and speculation. Then Chrome and Android VP of Engineering Hiroshi Lockheimer contradicted the Wall Street Journal in a tweet confirming Google's commitment to Chrome OS. And a Google spokesperson's response to my request for clarification unequivocally stated that Google wasn't sun-setting the Chrome OS. But then again, Google CEO Sundar Pichai, who once ran the Chrome group, has said that Chrome OS and Android would come closer together. The controversy has been echoing ever since. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More
